Shootout with Bill and the Journey Home

Feb. 27, 85.

Started early with the Doc for the island and soon get to the snipey place. Found it good going and very good lying ground but not many snipe and had to shoot very straight to kill 12 couple. Cody came and fetched us in Ryder’s boat and wore a very satisfied air, he referred us to his bed for an explanation. This on inspection was a disgusting sight and the Doc, by the aid of a microscope, discovered some animalcula1 but no longer living. The Doc discovered a pond back in the wood where wood ducks come in thick in the evening. Saw several snakes in the morning and one large gator, shot one of the snakes about four feet long. Doc and I started back to St. Johns prairie after quail but only found two after a long hunt. There was a lot of water about and no sign of game of any description. Spent the afternoon trying to upset Ryder’s boat but found it by no means easy to manage at all. In the evening made the acquaintance of a funny little girl born in England but out here for five years, only 15 but quite ready for it. Had a lesson in American slang from her, she informed me that only the bad girls wore their hair frizzed in England and said she knew all about them. The Doc her and her mother [went] out for a row in the evening and [he] crammed them full of fables about Arkansaw etc.
